What makes a great sibling or friend?
The most obvious answer is one who is unselfish. The greatest war going on in this life is the war between caring about oneself or caring about others. Selfishness destroys relationships. It is the number one cause of conflict, arguments, divorce, and even war.
James 4:1 says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” Every trouble starts because of self -centeredness.
If we will begin looking out for the interest of others, we will help our relationships to grow and improve.
“Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests.”
Philippians 2:4
In seeking to be selfless, which brings out the best in us, we also want to make sure that we are helping others to become their best selves as well.
When we hold people accountable to becoming their best, our relationships become healthy and balanced.
If on the other hand the people in your life are not interested in growing and becoming a selfless person themselves, then it may be time to create some distance so they can grow into who God created them to be.
Our time is well spent on this earth in growing into the likeness of Christ. We must become aware of our own growth, and also aware of those around us. This is how
we create a healthy environment in which one can thrive.
The biblical principle of sowing and reaping helps us to understand relationships. When you sow generosity and kindness you reap these things, unless of course you are sowing in the wrong field. Good farmers that produce good crops pay attention to where they are planting.
Unfortunately, not every field produces. This is where wisdom and prudence come in.
Once you discover how your life has been impacted by your family of origin, you can begin healing those wounds through awareness, godly anchoring, and visualization. You will become more aware of unhealthy love patterns in your life and therefore will seek healthier relationships to help you thrive in this life!
